Each September, wildlife enthusiasts witness one of the Central Coast’s most remarkable seasonal events.

Animal lovers begin gathering from every direction, drawn by an instinct scientists have yet to fully explain. They recognize one another almost immediately. One will casually mention their dog, prompting another to produce approximately 600 photos of their cat. Rescue stories are exchanged. Auction strategies are quietly discussed. By the end of the evening, complete strangers are cheering each other on over dessert.

Researchers have given this phenomenon a name: Whiskers Under the Moon.

Marcus has the social skills of someone who accidentally says “Love you” before hanging up with the bank.

The first thing he might do when meeting someone new is hiss. Not because he’s angry. Not because he wants trouble. It just seems to be how his little brain announces, “Oh! A person! Hello!” Unfortunately, society has assigned a different meaning to that particular sound.

Once everyone gets past Marcus’s admittedly unconventional greeting ritual, he’s an absolute gem. This four-year-old sweetheart at our Santa Barbara campus is active, affectionate, curious, and apparently even leash trained. He also enjoys listening to lo-fi beats, which feels exactly right for a cat who is trying very hard to exist peacefully despite occasionally sending the wrong email to the wrong department.

Marcus isn’t looking for someone who needs perfect communication. He’s looking for someone who understands that sometimes the sweetest souls just have a funny way of introducing themselves.

Come meet Marcus. Just remember: the hiss is basically a handshake. We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.
